I'm a man of wealth and taste...
Appearance: Eli is of an average height and build, and although his mother hates it (probably because she misses her little baby boy), he loves to keep a little hair on his face. It's a look he hasn't had for very long, only about a year (in other words, as long as he's actually been able to grow hair on his face), but he calls it his signature look. His hair is brown and his eyes are gray, and he prefers to keep his hair messy. He hates having it combed or, God forbid, slicked back. Years of torture when it came to fixing his hair as a young child made him resent ever having to look presentable. His favorite look is the one where he's just rolled out of bed--although he wouldn't tell anyone this, especially a girl. Similarly, his favorite look on a girl is when she's just rolled out of bed, and he certainly tells girls this.
He is Caucasian. He also hates stroking his chin, but every since he grew his mini beard he does it by instinct. He (figuratively) smacks himself over the head whenever he catches himself doing it. He is a soft walker, meaning that he can sneak up on anyone easily (he's scared his mother by walking up behind her more times than he can count). He has rather small hands and feet.
Personality: At first he might seem like a quiet, shy guy, but the reality is that he just doesn't like making small talk. He hates being introduced to people because it's always the same thing over and over again. He also hates phrases such as "How are you?" or "What have you been up to?" He lives for the deeper conversations. He thinks most people in the world are idiots and is very cynical. When it comes to the ladies, he tries to be himself, but he is an instinctive liar. Before he knows it, he'll be lying to a girl flat-out without thinking about it first. He is both a reader and a writer, although he has a lot of trouble with the latter. He's come a long way when it comes to writing, from getting low grades as a ten-year old boy in the subject to having top marks in his more recent classes. Top marks in writing aren't enough for him, though. He wants to write fiction, and he wants to get his writing out there. He wants it to mean something.
His dream day is to curl up on the couch or in a chair with a book for a couple of hours by the fire and then, later, sit at his desk, back hunched over, and write with his typewriter. He's quite the night owl when it comes to writing--he's stayed up till five in the morning writing before. He is his own harshest critic, though--he's thrown away one hundred page drafts just because he hated them so much. He tends to be hard on himself, both on writing and in real life.
As a result of all this pessimism regarding humanity and hiding in a corner with his typewriter, his social life is not the best. He's not exactly what you would call a socialite, but he has a fear of turning into a hermit, so he comes out of his hole to talk every now and then. His problem is he gets easily frustrated with people in general--they're either too stupid, too boring, or too pretentious. If someone comes off as honest and interesting to him, he can stand them. Hey, he might actually like them.

I've been around for a long, long year...
History: His parents married a year or so before he was born, and, thankfully, are still together to this day. As a result, he has a good model of what a relationship is supposed to be like. He was born in Scotland but moved to England at the age of two. As a young child, he had a friend named Emily, and they were inseparable up until the age of nine. They initially became friends because of how similar their names were, and then found out that their personalities complemented each other nicely. Then, when they were both nine, Emily drowned in the nearby river. Eli was devastated, and he stayed shut up in his room for a week without talking to anybody, even his younger sister, Annette. This could be a reason why he has trouble forming relationships. He became so attached to Emily that it was difficult to live without her.
Aside from the Emily tragedy, nothing of much significance happened in his life. At first, when his sister was born, he had problems coping with becoming a big brother, and shunned her from the longest time. He also went through a hitting phase. Eventually, though, he grew to love his younger sister, and they would play creative games together out in the backyard. She always comes to him for advice, and he usually doesn't have trouble giving it. Unless it involves social problems, which it usually does.
His family does not have much money, but everyone was ecstatic when he got into the school on a scholarship. His parents praised him for his brains, and although he liked this, he wondered if they would have been just as proud of him if he hadn't made it into the school.
Family:
Father: Gerald Appleby (39)
Mother: Margaret Appleby (40)
Sister: Annette Appleby (12)
Anything you'd like to add? Eli loves--no, is obsessed with--the taste of blackberries. Don't leave a bowl of them near him. He will eat them all.
