Once again the teenager had found herself in an awkward position, she had abandoned the party half way through managed the time to change into something much less extravagant but it had been something her mother had fancied therefore quite formal all the while. She didn’t exactly comprehend why she’d been leaving this time but something must be happening on this particular night and she had to be there witnessing it on those oddly paved streets.
It had been the same route as last, climbing the tree then hoping over the fence. The long journey to town all the way moving as fast as she possibly could. She managed to sprint the entire length unable to catch her breath until mere steps away from the market place only to see the grand fair.
Her mouth was slightly ajar at the sight she was seeing; it was extraordinary, the scenery hadn’t been of this world she had thought. The addiction to it all, everything was unreal and Allie couldn’t even blink fearful this moment would begin to drift away as soon as she closed her eyes indifferent on however long it was. Her feet danced around trying to catch everything, remember every smell, feeling, emotion. Everything was imaginary in her head, something that she would have only dreamt of but now it had all been in front of her.
Tugging at the loose strands in her delicately done hair, the blond strands seemed like just a meager distraction for her anxious hands while her eyes became power hungry and lustful. Making her way slowly around she came to a little side show, nothing but five to ten people stood around watching as the puppets moved back and forth arguing over nonsense such as politics and economy. Things like that didn’t seem to even exist in this world; of course there was trading and the necessity of paying your entrance but that wasn’t considered a burden, more of an offering for making such an extravagant blessing to the onlookers lucky enough to lay their eyes on the show
Allie slowly walked through, gently pushing to the front in hope of seeing something more extravagant then she had already seen in this grouping, people were shoving her from every direction as though she was just tumbleweed caught in a breeze. Due to beginning to feel claustrophobic she hurried out of the crowd only to be caught by someone.
The person had clung onto her knapsack tightly as Alice looked at the person, obviously wanting more than a simple introduction to her. Tugging on her knapsack she began to panic. Although she had come alone today if she lost it her nanny would find out she had been sneaking out. Looking back at the person on stage for only a moment’s time she wondered how this gruesome person had found her and not anyone else in this large crowd. Looking at him in the eye she found the guts to say, “Hey! What are you doing?” the man quickly pulled away from her it was like he had been a child touching a hot stove when the shocked expression rose. Hot faced Alice began to run away from him, her nerves were just out of control at this point.
Continuing to walk even though the person had been out of sight Alice just felt much safer getting away from there at this point. Her feet moved her around the festival though her heart was no longer in it. This magical world had been ruined for her. The area hadn’t been very crowded but a few people were around, just walking around trying to sell their goods unable to get a place closer to the activities.
That’s when things begun going wrong though, someone had let out a shrill shriek, the noise ringing yet no one seemed to care, no one moved. What was wrong with these people? Someone was obviously in trouble. She ran to the source of the sound only to see two people. A woman cornered and the perpetrator saying some words to her under his breath so only she would hear.
Alice’s eyes widened only to watch him grab her closely, something wasn’t right about this situation. What was she a witness to? This hadn’t been that average love relationship. She understood what was happening as the woman stopped fighting giving up on the idea of a rescuer coming, Allie helpless in this situation a mere teenager trapped in an inconvenient situation. Wrong place at the wrong time, it’s more than averagely called.
Alice began to walk away slowly, gasping for air but unable to breath properly, unable to move her eyes off of the poor woman’s fate. She knew the women would either be scarred forever or killed, neither were decent endings to a life. Happy endings didn’t exist anymore; this is what her father kept her from. Only a couple steps back and Alice bolted unable to hold her desire to get away as soon as possible, she didn’t care if they heard she figured no one would follow them and no one did. It was just her rushing back into a large crowd. Something was wrong though, Alice was lost; lost and alone.
Sinking onto the hard surface of a bench while a crowd cheered and awed at whatever was occurring on stage, probably the intricate footwork of a low paid dancer or a well designed act meant to keep a crowd around. Alice wasn’t happy with this; she wanted everyone to know what was happening just under their noses. Alice wanted her suburban life back, wanting the innocence of knowing nothing bad in the world existed. As hard as she tried to escape what had been seen only minutes before she couldn’t, it was permanently impressed into her memory merely closing her eyes had brought on the woman’s face. Alice couldn’t tell anyone, she would deal with this alone and force it on no one else.
Alice was going to deal with this alone, embed it deep into her stories or share it to Delilah in the crevices of the night when no one was awake to hear her words.
As the festival went on Alice sat there watching, how was her wonderland able to keep its magic even though such horrid things happened there?
