It was chilling. There was no other way to describe how cold the Kurzick forest was on the mind, body and soul. It had such a way of messing with her senses, but what would you expect? Her soul belongs on the smooth Jade Sea surface, Feeling the warmth of the sun upon her back as she crossed the gem-like ocean. Waves solidified in place, Fish still stuck in a swim within their Jade crust. But this was different, she saw the sun. Rather, the sliver of one over the mountains, yet, it was extinguishing rapidly. Too quickly for her liking.
The Ferndale forest was made of tree’s that were towering above, Some rivaled the Luxon’s pirate ships with ease, but these remained of a gothic horror style. The Kurzicks that inhabited the forest were dangerous, but the creatures within the dark forest were a bigger threat. They were in a territory controlled by the animals the lurked in the shadows. It was not uncommon to hear some blood-curling cry in the night, one that sent shivers down the small pirate battalion’s bones and staying there till the assurance of daybreak was upon them. Many a nights went without so much as a wink of sleep, Fear keeping the warriors and rangers awake. This was not their land, nor the aristocratic Kurzicks. Rather the beings that kept everybody on their toes.
A wind swept through the area. Winding through the labyrinth of trees before encasing the small battalion; But they remained focus, watching the sun on the mountain’s edge slowly dip down, taking the last red tint of the sky with it.
Wooden shafts clacking together brought her attention back in, her commander stood, raising one arm up. Hand extended, fingers reaching out towards the woods, as if trying to conjure a fire strong enough to burn the plants down. They fell in line, lifting wooden composite bows up, hooking an arrow into them and pulling back.
The wood moaned under the pressure of the string being drawn, creaking as if of old age but rather just warming up. The line of archers held the bows at the steady, all identical to each other, all awaiting the same motion.
She anchored the arrow tail to her cheek. Feeling the white bird-feather’s run across her face slightly, across the smudged blue and red war paint. She felt her sore muscles tremble slightly under the pressure of the bow, wanting to snap back. But not now.
Just as the sun was blotted out, As if on cue, a soft rumbling was heard. She could hear the Luxon army become restless. They knew what was coming, but timing was everything.
The thing about being part of a faction, Was that you took a side, then you took what you want. The two sides, Pirate Luxons and Aristocratic Kurzicks warred for land constantly, and neither side dominated the other completely, showing no end to this age old competition. Let Emperor Kisu try to control it all he wanted, He would never prevail, not in the last dynasty, not in this one, and not in the next one would this war-torn continent give in. The Luxon Spirit and Kurzick Pride would refuse any truce and destroy any agreement.
Then they broke over the ridge. The hand clenched into a fist, and the bows were released of their stress. A cloud of arrows stained the sky before raining on their arch-rivals. The war had begun.
