"GHOST girl!" Mei repeated as if that made it perfectly clear, waving her hands wildly. "She is hearing little voice in head, yes? And she has saying little voice say you has kissing." She looked puzzled, tilting her head to examine the two of them. "Why two girl is to kissing?"
Lizzie shook her head. "Two girl is not to kissing," she replied bluntly, "at least not in this case. Listen to your Leader."
"YOU IS PRETTY FACE! PRETTY FACE NO IS TO TELLING I WHAT I DO!" Me yelled, but she didn't stop grinning, so Lizzie assumed she didn't mean it aggressively.

Clyde watched her, letting out an exhausted breath and flinching as she yelled.
"Mei! Shut up!" she barked right back, sitting up and watching the hyperactive warrior carefully. "I don't know what moron you're talking to. But there is nothing happening here. And Lizzie has as much power as I do. I say that as your leader." She growled lowly, eying the younger misfit darkly.

Mei looked at her straight on for a moment and then dropped her eyes in a half-bow. "Sorry, Leader," she said quietly, dark eyes glued to the floor. "But we is to getting in town. All I must saying."
Lizzie glanced at Clyde, surprised both by what she said and the level of control she had over the notoriously wild martial artist.

Clyde let out a heavy breath, ignoring Lizzie for the moment. She nodded slightly and leaned back. "It's fine. just, take it down a notch for now. Once we get in town, you're free to do whatever you want." she paused, "If you bring me the banner from the top of the church, I'll let you practice your martial arts on me."

Mei brightened instantly. "Is no lie? Leader, you is being most best!" She sprang to her feet. "Leader, Leader, Leader, if I is to running in town more fast than carriage I have having prize?"
Lizzie, feeling the tension in the air break, found herself smiling. "I'll give you a pound if you can," she told the little girl in a burst of generosity.

clyde opened her mouth to speak, but Lizzie chirped up instead. She grinned at Lizzie and then at Mei, "I'll double that." She moved over, kicking the door open. "Go mei! Go!" she said, making a shooing motion out the door with enthusiasm.

By now, Lizzie was holding in laughter. "Yes! Go, Mei!"
The diminutive Chinese girl whirled out of the door in a flurry of gold and blue silk, hitting the ground running. Although she knew how tough Mei was, Lizzie couldn't help wincing as she leapt. She turned to grin at Clyde anyway, though. "You were right. This is fun."

Clyde leaned over and shut the door, looking back at her. "I told you!" she insisted, grinning widely at her and leaning back, relaxing and letting out a breath. "We're almost there, she won't have to run long."

"Do you think she'll beat the carriages?" Lizzie asked, leaning back, still grinning. But the grin fell away suddenly as a thought struck her. "How did she know? About us, I mean?"

"Probably." Clyde said dully, seeing the grin fall she too went emotionless, hearing her question and shrugging. "I have no idea. Ghost Girl is a new personality of her's I guess." She mumbled, glancing at the door in thought. "No big deal. Who is even gonna believe her?"

Lizzie shrugged. "I don't know. But if she found out, other people might. And..." She sighed. "Never mind. No use crying over spilt milk, I suppose. I'll just have to cross my fingers and hope." She hated the idea of relying on luck, but there wasn't much option.

Clyde looked at her, sighing forcefully. "Look. If you want me to leave you alone. say so." She stated somewhat coldly. "If you need to protect your reputation that badly, I understand." She studied Lizzie's face, not sure what sort of a reply she'd receive. "We can turn around right now."

Lizzie forced a smile and shook her head. "It's too late now either way. So I might as well have some fun while I'm about it." That took a lot of effort to say, but once it was out she realised just how true that was. Damned if she did and damned if she didn't, so for once in her sheltered little life, she'd choose the most fun option.

Clyde could sense the forced feelings behind it letting out a breath as the carriage slowed and moving to the door, jumping out into the snow before turning around and offering Lizzie a hand.

Taking Clyde's hand gently, Lizzie dropped into the snow beside her with a slightly less fake smile. "Well? Where-"
Mei jumped out from behind a wall, causing Lizzie to give a tiny squeal of surprise from the back of her throat before she remembered she was made of sterner stuff.
"CARRIAGE IS MUCH SLOW!" the Chinese girl announced, holding out a hand for her prize. It was only when Lizzie went to get the money to pay her that she remembered her purse was, in fact, back at school. She muttered a bad word under her breath. "I'll pay you back later, ok, Mei?"
