One thing most people notice about Zephyr is that his skin isn’t dark, like most Gypsies. He has a tan, sure enough, but he isn’t one to wear a tan year round. His skin is the color of earth during the summer, but his skin turns more peach in the winter then the others. His skin is also riddled with a myriad of different scars from being so active and reckless. his biggest one is a burn on the palm of his right hand, which he got from being heroic. He also has a scar above his right eyebrow, which can’t be seen unless you really look for it. He has numerous scratches on his right arm from tending to his pet raven, Rapscallion.
Zephyr wouldn’t say it himself, but he is very handsome. He has chocolate brown eyes and brown hair to match, which, in the summer, seems to bleach blonde in the sunlight. His face is constantly changing however, he hates shaving, but he’ll do it when he needs to. Most of the time, he has a moustache and a beard to match. His hair length changes at random too, it actually grows very fast, and he trims it, but not very short. He always has a rugged look about him.
Tall and lean. Those words describe Zephyr very well. He stands at an audacious height of six foot four, and while he has muscles from doing work around camp, they’re the sinewy, hidden kind of muscle. He tends not to flaunt his body, dressing in buckskin outfits most of the time. He finds buckskin more comfortable then cotton. However, He will don a loose cotton shirt when the weather gets too hot for him.
Personality:
Zephyr is a very quirky man. Most people believe that, since he’s spent so much time around Mother Sophie, her madness has rubbed off on him a bit. This is somewhat true. He finds that people leave you alone more if you act a little crazy. He only gets normal in dire situations or when he finds himself comfortable in the company he’s in. Even then, he still has some quirks. He sees Mother Sophie’s way of speaking as a different language. Sometimes, he speaks that language instead of speaking normally. It’s hard for him to make the switch consciously unless someone ells him to do so.
Along with being quirky, Zephyr is a little lazy. He likes to pull a hat over his face and sleep the day away. One of his dreams is to spend a whole day sleeping, undisturbed. He loves to laze around, play guitar, play with Rapscallion, his raven, or just go lounge about with Bryce. He’ll be lazy just for the sake of being lazy. Heck, he’s got his own personal hammock to be lazy in.
Simple truth: Zephyr didn’t have a good life. No one really does, when you’re a gypsy. But his luck as a child was really bad. Sometimes he’ll slip into bouts of depression. This concept has made him love many girlfriends and friends. The best thing to do is just leave alone to his guitar and feed him regularly when he goes into a depression. He’ll snap out of it in time. It rarely lasts more then a few hours, at most, it’ll last a day or two. He’s not really depressed, just reflecting.
Zephyr’s best trait, however, is his loyalty. His friends, his lovers, and his people can trust him. He won’t let someone down. He’ll stay loyal to the woman he’s courting. He stands by Mother Sophie and Bryce, no matter what the cost. This trait will also be his downfall. He won’t back down from a fight if one of his friends or family gets hurt. He looks for vengeance if it needs to be given. He will guard Mother Sophie with his life, and if Bryce needs help, by god, he’ll get it.

I've been around for a long, long year...
History:
Family:
Parents:
Father:
Zephyr Lee Barnabas II Deceased, died at age 24 in a Caravan fire
Mother:
Marie Angelia Barnabas Deceased, committed suicide at age 33 by eating poisonous mushrooms
Siblings
[/u]Zephyr Lee Barnabas the third was born during a festival. Perhaps that is a contributing factor to his strangeness, perhaps not. But whatever the case was, he was born during a festival, ironically enough, celebrating fertility.
Zephyr Lee Barnabas the second, otherwise known as Zephyr’s father, was nothing like what his son has turned out to be. He was a hard worker and hating standing still. He secretly wanted to overthrow Sophie and become leader. He taught his son and the about hard work and perseverance. He often drank and gambled. Zephyr was taught by him to hate the English government and everyone who believed in it.
Zephyr’s Mother, however, was a wise and strong woman. She was wonderful in every way. She had a gift with plants, she seemed to know every herb and cure they possessed. She often tried to teach Zephyr about herbs and plants. He listened well enough, but he seemed to have other things on his mind.
The truth was that Mother Sophie took a shine to Zephyr. At first, he was afraid of her. After all, it is human nature to fear that which we don’t understand. Zephyr didn’t understand Sophie’s craziness and random sputters of wisdom at first. He was young and impressionable. He slowly began to understand her in time.
Zephyr’s father died when Zephyr was only five. The way that he saw it, some village folk had got mad at Zephyr Sr., who had beat them at poker. They wanted to scare him by smoking him out of his caravan, but smoke turned to fire, and fire turned the caravan, Zephyr’s home, into ash, with his Father inside. He had passed out after a lot of drinking and had been burned to a crisp. Marie was six months pregnant with twins.
It was after his Father’s death that Zephyr started to slowly come to understand Mother Sophie. She hadn’t quite gotten to crazy town yet, but she was definitely on her way. Zephyr began to give Sophie herbs that helped slow her process. She told him stories of a magical world called fantasia. She told everyone about it, actually, but most people thought it was just lore. Zephyr was the only one who knew, in his heart, that it was real. She would tell him stories, and he slowly began to understand her. Soon, people came to him and asked him to ask Sophie things. He was like a translator.
When Zephyr wasn’t with Sophie, he was watching over his siblings. He often prodded them in the direction he thought they should go. He noticed that Silas was good with animals. He took him to the shepherd and offered him as an apprentice. The same went for Gawaine, who was a tinkerer by nature. Maddie and Maggie were the difficult pair, however. They were always running about and causing all sorts of mischief. He worked to hard for his own good.
Zephyr never had formal schooling. He learned his letters and how to spell his name. He learned basic math, multiplication, and division. He learned how to sound words out and use a dictionary if he needed to. But he never lasted five minutes before he was outdoors. Everyone gave up on his learning and he mostly taught himself if he needed to learn. His education amounted to that of a sixth grader’s, and a slow sixth grader at that.
Years passed and Zephyr grew to be a teenager. He had gown out his hair and often put it in a ponytail, much to the chagrin of the pompous boys at Florence’s. The Florence girls flocked around him and he enjoyed it quite a bit. He kissed a few, to say the least. The Florence boys always resented him. He fought a few in his time, and he was happy to say that he always won, even if he got a black eye once or twice.
“Knowledge can breed evil. Evil can breed sadness, young one. Save her! Save her!”
Zephyr, for once, didn’t understand what Sophie meant when she said those words. He mulled over it for a while, finally giving up and going to bed. That night, he dreamed a terrible dream. He doesn’t remember it now, but he remembers that when he awoke, he felt a wave of helplessness and fear roll over him. He found all his siblings asleep and his Mother’s bed empty. He left their yurt and found her body out front, a blissful smile on her face as her eyes stared vacantly into the sky.
There was a mushroom in her hand.
Zephyr remembered his Mother always telling him about poisonous mushrooms and how to tell the difference between tasty ones and deathly ones. She knew the mushroom was poison, and so she ate it, because she missed her husband. He stood there for most of the morning, and even as the ravend gathered and dispersed, he never moved. The only one that moved him was Sophie, and she only got him just inside her tent before he burst out crying. There was an unspoken rule that men don’t cry, but in some cases, rules are made to be broken.
Zephyr became withdrawn from his brothers and sisters. He often spent his days out in front of the tent, playing guitar, or out in the woods hunting. He ate and slept with his family, but that was it. He eventually overcome the death of his mother, after two hard years. His attitude grew more laid back then before, and his family welcomed the change. Anything was better then the sulking, broody brother they had before.
Zephyr moved out of his family’s tent to across camp, where he made his own Tepee right next to Mother Sophie’s tent. It was a bold move, but he found a strange urge to guard her. Many people welcomed the move, they found it easier to ask Sophie things with him around. They began to regret not listening to her, because he occasionally didn’t translate. He turned lazy, mostly sleeping in his hammock outside, which he dubbed his own personal hammock. He only let small children sleep in it, and even then, he didn’t like the arrangement.
“Evil men seduce innocent women. It is their game.”
It was three years after he moved out that Maddie came to him in tears. Maggie was missing and they couldn’t find her. They searched every bit of woods they could until finally, Zephyr grudgingly went to Florence to inquire if they knew anything. The school officials knew nothing. However, on his way out, some older female students came to him and whispered in his ear, conveying some gristly rumors. They were about a man who had come to visit his sons and had talked about ‘acquiring himself some entertainment’ by the cemetery. Zephyr knew right away that his sister had to be there, because she had hid her diary there when she was young and always went there to write in it. He went to the cemetery at a run and discovered Maddie’s body, raped and dead. He brought her home and went back to his guitar. He was often found staring into the distance. The man was caught, but his money bought him a minimal sentence. That didn’t stop Zephyr though.
Let’s just say that after Zephyr was done, he wasn’t going to be doing anything with any other girls any time soon.
It was a year after his sister’s death that Bryce Sanders was born. Zephyr was intrigued with the young boy and began to watch him from afar, while still keeping most of his attention on Sophie. He went back to being lazy again, still keeping watch over Sophie.
As Bryce got older, Zephyr grew closer to him, acting as a sort of Father figure. He visited him when he guarded the entrance to Fantasia, and they struck up a friendship.
A few months after his 34th birthday came around, Zephyr found a young injured raven in the woods. He thought about killing it, but it looked so pitiful that he took it home and fed it. He began to train it. He named him Rapscallion, and he took to his name. He delivered messages between him and Bryce. He also picked up coins and brought them to Zephyr as well. He scared off Florence students if Zephyr found them to be to irksome to deal with himself. The bird became a sort of son to him.
Zephyr formally became Sophie’s bodyguard a year after finding Rapscallion. It was sort of a self-appointed position anyway, but he wasn’t recognized for it until he doused a fire that had consumed part of her tent, getting his hand burned in the process. He was honored to finally be recognized for the position, and he swore he would do the best he could. It was the least he could do for the woman who guided him through his troubled childhood.
Now even more years have passed and Zephyr is feeling an aura of evil coming from Florence. He fears for Sophie and Bryce’s safety.
