I'm a man of wealth and taste...
Appearance: Jon does get teased quite a bit about his appearance, and for good reason. He's not built quite like the 'norm'. Six foot three, he's skin over bone, and it seems like he hardly knows what to do with his limbs. When he's running, there's a certain grace to his movements, but Jon's been known to trip over his own feet at times. His skin is as pale as any lady's, as he has a dismaying tendency to burn.
His dark blond hair is thick and wavy, falling to his shoulders. Between that and his frame, he's been mistaken for a fairly angular girl- only at a distance, true, but he's never quite gotten over it. Usually his hair is just down, but if he's reading he'll pull it back into a horsetail so that it doesn't fall into his eyes. Jon tends to look constantly short of sleep, and the thick glasses he wears only emphasize the fact.
Though his features are a bit delicate, the sharp jut of his chin and the prow of his nose are masculine enough. Often he sports a bruise or black eye, from someone's fists or his own clumsiness. The tips of his fingers bear ink stains that he can't quite erase.
Jon is hardly vain, but he does take care in his appearance. He can't afford rich clothing, but what he does have is scrupulously clean and fits well (he does his own mending.) He's the sort that tends to blend into the wallpaper, and that's the way he likes it- no exotic dress or foolish dramatics.
Personality: Most people around the school tend to view him as weak and spineless; certainly he runs from all confrontations.
But that's because it's only logical. He's not as strong as the other boys, they out number him- what's he supposed to do, stand there and take it?
Jon frequently tries to put sense into the nonsensical world.
Around strangers, he tends to be awkward and stuttering, with a dismaying tendency to blush at the slightest provocation. Jon wasn't around other children for most of his young life, and his social skills are sorely lacking. Once he gets to know someone, however, Jon reveals his sharp tongue and sarcastic sense of humor. He's a realist, a cynic, and doesn't have a lot of patience for people who persist in believing in the impossible- magic, for instance? Absolutely ridiculous.
In polite company his manners are unfailingly correct, if a bit stiff. Jon isn't quite certain what to do with girls, when he's not avoiding them, and so he seems like quite the gentleman. Despite his seeming disinterest in women, no one has figured that it's men who catch his eye, and it's only been mentioned in taunts. Jon certainly isn't going to encourage them.
He doesn't like being told what to do, though he won't protest in public- he will just quietly continue doing whatever he wants to do. So despite his intelligence, he's hardly a teacher's pet. Jon doesn't like physical fights, but he enjoys a good debate.
And a debate is not shouting at each other as loudly as possible, lads.

Dreams: Taking over his father's bookshop, perhaps expanding into a cafe where the intelectual minds of the day come and meet.
Fears: Losing his mind, going blind, his father's death, sickness, anyone discovering his...preference.

I've been around for a long, long year...
History:
Elizabeth Harvey had always wanted a daughter. A little girl to hold and teach, plait her hair, buy her dresses- Elizabeth had grown up in a house full of men, and she was fully set on spoiling her little girl. And she was certain it was going to be a girl, this new baby. Knew it in her bones.
So it was. But problems developed in the womb, and little Maria was stillborn.
Elizabeth and Matthias were crushed, but they tried to continue on. After a period of mourning they decided to try again, and this time they had a healthy baby boy- Jonathan, after Elizabeth's father.
But though both parents loved the boy, Elizabeth could not help seeing her other child in his eyes. Matthias did most of the tending, while his wife decended deeper and deeper into depression.
She made an attempt to love Jon, and she did, truly, but she treated him like a girl at times- she loved to play with his hair and taught him to dance, taught him manners and his letters.
Then tragedy struck the family once more, in the form of sickness. Pneumonia took Elizabeth, and Matthias was left to raise Jon- then ten years old- on his own.
Busy with his shop and the household, managing finances, Matthias never remarried. He was a good father to Jon, if distant at times, and the pair bonded over dusty tomes. Jon's father encouraged learning of all sorts- it had been education that brought him up in the world, and he was determined his son should do the same.
So Jon dove deeper into his studies, spending many hours among paper and ink and the words of dead men. He applied to Florence's on a scholarship and got in. While his father was ecstatic, Jon's own reaction was a bit more reserved.
He wasn't entirely certain he could handle living away from home- especially when surrounded by other boys.
But Matthias insisted, and away he went.
Family:
Father: Matthias Harvey
Mother: Elizabeth Harvey (deceased)
Sister: Maria Harvey (stillborn)
