The apartment she shared with her twin sister wasn't very big, nor was it located in a very nice part of town. But Peyton and Rae were only 17, still in high school, going into their senior year, and their jobs only paid so much. Their mother hadn't objected to them leaving, but that was to be expected from a woman who had never really wanted children, although she had tried her best when they were younger. Still, Peyton had always been closer to her father, that is, until he died.
It had been six years since they'd received news of his dreadful passing, though it wasn't surprising, as he had been increasingly sick. For years the man had suffered severe migraines, double vision, a lack of energy, and seizures. No matter how many doctors he visited, no one could come up with a conclusion as to what was wrong. It could have been the pain, or just being fed up with not being able to do anything, but no matter the reason the forty year old man had over dosed on pain pills. Peyton's only comfort was that his death hadn't been painful, he'd simply fell asleep and never woke up.
The young woman sat up in her bed, eyes looking at the window. The sun was shining brightly behind the curtains, so she didn't need to look at her alarm clock to know it was late. Then again she was almost always up late, maybe two or three AM, so it made sense that she would rise late. Barking noises soon filled her ears, and she turned to look at a medium sized golden retriever who was whining from where she lay at the foot of the bed. "Hey Riv." She muttered, standing and petting the dog, who didn't move.
In the corner of the cramped room was a small black-wood dresser. No clothes were located in her closet, as other things occupied it. Everything, really, that she couldn't find a place for was crammed into it, causing her to give it the name 'Her black hole''. As it was summer, she dressed in navy shorts and a tank top, though she had to pull the shirt from the dirty clothes hamper. She always put off doing laundry until it was absolutely necessary.
Not in the mood to take River for a long run, she just opened the front door to the apartment and let the dog run down the stairs, to the grass, then come back up. The headache she had was the result of her drinking at last night's party. So she wasn't 21, and most people would consider her the kind of girl who got all 'A's and studied for every single test. Well, she was that type of girl, but in her opinion the law against alcohol was idiotic, and parties were a lot more fun when beer was involved. Besides, it was summer.
The best remedy Peyton had found for hangovers was coffee, and the small cafe right down the street made some really good espresso, depute the fact that it was old and run down looking. Of course, almost everything in the downtown area of New York looked the same way. "See you later Riv. I promise, I'll take you on a run later, ok?" Her other pet, an Egyptian Mau named Jayden was probably scurrying around in some tree, but she was used to him not being there half the time.
The walk to the cafe was quick, and it would have been nice had her headache not gotten worse. Both her and Rae went there all the time, and as soon as the man working at the counter saw her walk in, he went about making her usual hangover remedy, which was different from the caramel machiatto she got if she was feeling fine. "Thanks." She muttered with a half smile, handing him a five dollar bill. After getting her change, she looked around the cafe, only to notice Rae. "Hey." She said in the same dead tone she had used with the man making the coffee. Without waiting for an invitation, she sat down, drinking her coffee and waiting for the headache to subside.
He said: Haha suck it. =D
