"Symbols, girls. They're such powerful things." Amira cracked her knuckles thoughtfully, parading in front of her class. She held up a rosary in one hand, which she was winding and unwinding absently around her slim brown wrist.
"So much power, girls, can be enclosed in such a simple thing, hmmm? This little sign. Two lines." With her free hand, she picked up the chalk and swiftly scratched a rough cross on the board. "Or earlier, two different lines, of course." Two curved lines squeaked out a fish shape.
"Think of how charged these symbols are, how innately packed with the power of ideology. Think of the men and women who lived and died in history thanks to these two lines. And of course, much as your parents and the Christian establishment would like you to think otherwise, these charges are not just limited to Christianity, or even religion."
With a few deft flicks of the chalk, she drew an Aum, a vague yingyang shape, a Star of David. And then a cross, ends bent to the right, to form a swastika shape. She tapped that shape with her rosaried hand. "Who can tell me what connotations this symbol carries worldwide?"
