Appearance: Katja is…odd. Not conventionally beautiful, that’s for sure, and you wouldn’t guess her Icelandic roots from her curly dark hair, but she has a typically Scandinavian face, with fine bone structure, pale skin and red lips. Her face is quite thin, made more so by her tumbling dark brown curls. Her long fringe is always falling in her wide dark-lashed grey-green eyes, but she doesn’t mind.
She might not have the straight blonde hair you would associate with an Icelander, but she has certainly received the Scandinavian height. She stands at five foot eleven in her stockinged feet, with long, slender legs and arms and a good figure. It would be a better figure if she (or the other inhabitants of her body) took better care of it, but it is in turns stuffed and starved, as well as being periodically bounced off walls, floors, trees and Mei.
Personality: There are two important facts which affect Katja’s personality. First of all, she can’t talk. Well, that’s inaccurate. She can talk but…well, she has a SERIOUS stutter. She has a total block on the sounds k, g and d. So she doesn’t talk much, but gives the impression of constantly wanting to babble. And when she does talk, she thinks through the sentence carefully first, checking for pitfalls. But sometimes she still trips up, especially since fate saw fit to grant her a name not one word of which she can pronounce. So her introductions stall at, “My name is K-k-k-k-k…” Usually, she just writes down anything she can’t say; she carries a chalkboard for this reason.
The second fact is an intriguing one, which should place Katja right in the Unloved. You see, Katja is a natural born medium. As long as she can remember, she has had the ability to see and communicate with ghosts. Unfortunately, the same does not apply to the rest of the world, and her stuttering away to her ghostly companions can look uncomfortably like madness. Hence her placement in the Misfits.
In addition to which, she periodically gets her body taken over by various restless spirits, which doesn’t help her case. In the past she’s got into fights with the toughest people in two nations, beaten up little kids, thrown herself at men and women alike, tried to assasinate people…she’s got a reputation for being about the most unpredictable person in her home city of Rejkjavik.
The thing is, Katja’s actual personality isn’t that weird. She’s quite a helpful girl, who likes other people to be happy, but just as much she likes to have fun herself. She’s a very outsdoorsy person, having been brought up half-in and half-out of the sweeping mountains of Iceland, and equally at home in both city and country. She climbs, runs, rides, dances, fishes, swims, rows…she also rather likes writing, incidentally.
In terms of the real world, Katja can actually be rather naïve and very distant. She doesn’t expect people to take advantage of her, she has no idea of the myriad nasty things said about her behind her back and even to her face. Because she lives entirely in her own little dreamworld, she’s protected from the harsh realities of the real world.
History: Katja’s parents, Fjalar Nilsson and Sigur Bjornsdottir, were well-off Icelandic merchants, with one house in Rejkjavik and another in the mountains. Katja was their fourth child, preceded by her brothers Egil, Valdimar and Jens, and from the day she was born there was something odd about her. As a baby, her eyes often followed things nobody could see. As she grew older, she didn’t speak more than a few words before the age of four, just ‘mamma’, ‘pabbi’ and her stuttering approximation of her brothers’ names; E’il, Val and Jens.
They sent her to a specialist school in Rejkjavik to improve her speech, but Katja refused to pay attention, still talking to her ‘imaginary friends’. The only time she left her own little world was when they went to the country at the weekends, and she and her brothers would run wild through the mountains and lakes. She wasn’t unintelligent, not in the least, she just had more important things for her eight-year-old mind than repeating ‘Ég kom við hjá Nirði niðri í noðrfirði nyrðri’. Her reading, writing and maths skills were actually above average, at least when she was paying attention.
She experienced her first possession at the ripe old age of nine. She met a little boy ghost on the pier who had drowned trying to find his sister’s ring which he dropped into the lake’s icy waters, and she lent him her body to dive for it. She was then hideously ill for almost a month thanks to the cold, but he did move on, which made her happy.
Soemtimes she voluntarily let them possess her body. Some spirits just pushed their way in. And her family got more and more worried. They thought perhaps she would benefit from a change of scene, so it was goodbye to the mountains, lakes and ghosts of Iceland and hello to Florence Academy. Which turned out to be more haunted than any school has any right to be. This was a whole new set of challenges for Katja; new ghosts, another language to speak in her stuttering, stumbling voice, new friends to make.
She didn’t fit in anywhere. She wasn’t cool enough for the Unloved, and everyone thought she was utterly insane, gabbling to thin air.
The answer was obvious.
She became a Misfit.
And she loves it.
Fears: -Those really REALLY horrible ghosts who want to take over her body for good
-Being taken over by a ghost who picks a fight with someone who will actually kill her
-Particularly large spiders and snakes
-Losing a member of her family
-Being crippled
-Being asked to talk or sing in front of people
Likes: -Helping people
-Getting drunk
-Being active
-Fishing
-Climbing
-Iceland
-The other Misfits
-Writing
Dislikes: -Her stutter
-Nagging ghosts
-Being cooped up inside
-Hurting people
-Lying
Dreams: Yup, she lives in them.
Anything you'd like to add? I just realised that she’s a sort of Icelandic Luna Lovegood XD
