A Man Named... KURTIS LOWE
He didn't quite regret that he'd hit her, yet, but he was feeling the guilt, and it was starting to wash into his brain about how stupid he'd been to lash out like some rabid animal. Running a hand down his face, Kurtis watched her work, his grey eyes continuing to study her as he continued to relax against the bark of the tree, blinking at her breathless laughter, confused as to where it had come from. The use of magic was making him a bit groggy, and he was just beginning to feel the effect of it on his mind and limbs, which now felt heavier. "No, not insensitive, practical," he said with a shrug, yawning slightly. "Only because my father," he grimaced at the thought, "Will disown me and strip me of the family name, literally, if I mess up big time, or at all, I think. He wasn't happy when I switched cliques, he wasn't happy when I didn't score highest on a test, but it wasn't ever enough to really make him mad, but... Getting in trouble for being outside, for running away... Well, that will bring shame to the name Lowe," he spoke softly, the words barely even a whisper, closing his eyes. "And I couldn't leave my sisters and brothers," he shook his head. It was true that his family meant a lot to him. A lot, a lot. (Poe sucks at writing! :])
Honestly, Kurtis had no clue where he'd be in the world without his family there standing beside him, around him, behind him. A man without a family- let it be a wife and children or mother and father and siblings... then there was no point. Tripp, Chadwick, Emma... All of them meant so much.
Feeling his eyes close again he blinked quickly, looking up at the sun that was beginning to rise out of the Eastern hills, painting the sky, ready to turn the sky into a beautiful vibrant blue, clearly preparing the world for a beautiful day. He should be happy, not worried that he'd be expelled and his father find out. Lord, nothing could be worse than that.
A chuckle, low and murmured left his lips, and he watched Tali as she rambled on about how he just had to trust her when she said that he was handsome and interesting. In all truth, he did know it. He just didn't believe it when it came out of the girl's mouth that he'd just attacked. "Fine, then, we'll just agree to pretend to believe the other and then agree to disagree, right? After all, if we're both set on the fact that we aren't what they say we are, then we might as well pretend to please them." Sadly, it seemed like Kurtis's whole life was pretend. Pretending to agree with someone. Pretending to like someone. Pretending that someone was right for him, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. Oh well, at least he was good at it, right?
Thinking about her next question, Kurtis shrugged, a grin spreading up onto the corners of his lips. "Why wouldn't someone be pleased to meet a beautiful young woman such as yourself? Especially at a time of day when no one else is around to interrupt or stare, or tsk their tongues in disapproval. Actually, I quite like the privacy that this excursion has granted us." He looked at her intently, wondering the same thing of her. "I rather wish that our meeting had gone a bit differently, but, I suppose what is done cannot be undone. But what do you think of it, Miss? You still haven't exactly told me your name, by the way," he added gently still smiling. He was desperate to learn her name, it seemed. "But, on with my question, are you glad that we met? Or do you wish you could run into the great forest behind us and hide?" As she continued to work on his hand, telling him that she was a maid instead of a gardener, he shook his head. You'd think the people back at the school would be smart enough to know that they couldn't give someone a job they didn't like or enjoy and expect them to do a splendid life. Such is life though, no?
Ii is not!" Kurtis said indignantly. "Especially not when I tell you that is what I would like to be called... And it is. I'd much rather be called Kurtis or Kurt than Mr. Lowe. I don't want to be old yet. Or at least not called my father's name... yet." The smile one his face was sincere, but he still doubted she'd call him the desired name. She seemed like one of those stubborn girls that stuck to her values and principles. Not that that was really a bad thing. There were too many girls these days without values and principles.
A dark laugh left Kurtis's throat, and he looked at her, a mischievous glint in his eye. "I believe, my dear, that I told you I tripped over you, they'd think something else. And if my pants were that dirty from being on the ground with you and then helping you up, I'd be kicked from the school for the belief that I was some sort of male tramp." The whole idea was so crazy that he found it hysterical, and he laughed again, smiling widely now, his bad mood and his lack of energy seeming to dissipate.
