As he hurried off, Rosie stayed there, just staring at the tight text. Willing it to make sense, to come off the page, to show her the magic and miracles it showed Novak. But it just lay there, featureless type on a yellowing page, and though she struggled and fought to make in interesting, her eyes just slid from the boring, black type.

"I found this, as well," Novak said from behind her a moment later, shuffling the books in his arms until he managed to pry loose one particular one, thin and blank-covered. "I don't know if you want it, but it might help. French pronunciation guide." He smiled a little sheepishly. "I had something like it for English, when I was younger. French is easier. English has... well, all the words that are not said how they are spelt. But this might help your French a little."
He offered her a little smile, putting the pile of books on the desk next to her, then hurried off to pick up the Kafka novella he had chosen before. "Sixpence... sixpence, sixpence, sixpence..." he muttered, patting his pockets and frowning. "Aha! Ich denkte so! Nur ein bisschen Taschengeld, aber..." With a grin of triumph, he plucked a silver coin out of his breast pocket, dropping it onto the book cover.
"What is it you are having trouble with in maths, anyway?" he asked conversationally. "Or French? I mean, not... um, just that I need to know where we start from, if you will me to tutor you. Want me to tutor you, even." He flushed, looking sheepish; he hated it when he did that! Will was a great annoyance for him, much as who and where had always been - when he was flustered, he had a tendency to mix up words like that.

She took the book with a little squee of delight. "No, you're such a nice person! Thank you!" Even though she would never use the book. She was too lazy, really. Anyway, people were way more fun than books!
"It just doesn't make sense," she replied, a slight frown creasing her perfect brow. "Why can't X just be a number? What's a gradient? I can't even do my times tables, I just don't get it!" She pouted. "And French is so weird and I can't remember any of the words or how you put a sentence together or what it's meant to sound like." SIgh. "I'm just useless at school, I'm afraid, but there are more important things, right?!"

"Are there?" Novak replied lightly, and laughed. Picking up the Kafka book again, he tucked it neatly under his arm, and held out his hands for the other books. "Here, I'll carry those for you," he offered, with a smile. "I'm used to carrying these things - stronger than I look, na?"
Shrugging, he put his head on one side. "There is a lot more important than school. But school helps. A good education helps. And, of course, French seems to be important in the social circles of this country, weisst du dass? But my own French is far from perfect, you know. Writing or reading is simple. But I have an accent. A really bad accent." He laughed again, quietly and self-deprecatingly. "Even worse than my accent in English. Maths is simple, though - and I didn't have to learn it all over again when I got here. And x isn't a number because, if x was a number, you'd have to do the whole sum all over again for every different x. Make sense?"
With a bright smile, which was surprising luminescent coming from Novak, he shrugged one shoulder. "Doch ja. There are more important things than school. Like books."
